Standards

Prince Edward Island potatoes are packed to meet the standards of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Regulations of the Canada Agricultural Products Act. PEI Potatoes packed for consumers meet Canada #1 grade standards. There are similar standards for institutional and processing potatoes.

Sizes

Prince Edward Island offers a wide range of potato sizes.

Long 2 inch minimum diameter, with 60% of the potatoes over 2 1/4 inch in diameter
Round 2 1/4 inch minimum diameter
Canada #1 Small within the range of 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 inches
Creamer within the range of 3/4 to 1 5/8 inches
Large* minimum diameter of 3 inches
Chefs* minimum diameter of 2 3/4 inches
Count** range from 50 to 120 count

* Large and chef potatoes and used mostly in food service operations.


** Count refers to the number of potatoes in a 50 pound carton. The higher the count size the more potatoes. Russets or long type potatoes (baking potatoes) are packed by count.
